An example of 19th century Abolitionist needlework
Women played a major role in the abolitionist movement forming sewing circles where objects decorated with abolitionist emblems were produced either for sale to raise money for the abolitionist cause or to decorate their homes. The anti-slavery movement found great momentum in England from the end of the 18th century. Slavery was finally abolished in Britain in 1834.
