A Mousey Thompson Ashtray to be sold in our General Sale on Wednesday 20th June

This is a classic example of Robert 'Mousey' Thompson workmanship.

Do you know the origin of the trademark mouse?

Apparently the origin of the mouse as the famous Yorkshire man's mark was almost in the way of being an accident. He was carving a large cornice for a screen with a fellow carver who remarked he was as poor as a church mouse.  Robert Thompson promptly carved a mouse on the screen and henceforth the mouse became his trademark.

A fabulous collection of local artist Ken Watts artworks went under the hammer 6th June (Antique and Interiors Sale)

Local artist Mr Kenneth John William Watts was born in 1932 in Forest Hill, New Addington, London. He spent his national service in Kenya staying in the army until the late 1950's when he made his move to the North East. After moving to Jarrow Kenneth Watts started capturing the street scenes of the local area and created minutely detailed paintings of nearby streets.  His love of drawing developed at a very young age; he briefly attended drawing classes at night school in his teens but was mostly self-taught.  He started to paint the fast-changing townscapes of Jarrow and surrounding areas in the early 1960's developing his technique & skills as he worked.  In the late 60’s and early 70’Kenneth Watts had a deep involvement in the Jarrow Art Group and was instrumental in organising exhibitions.

He then went on to set up the Bede Gallery with Vince Rea and painted a huge mural in Sunderland; as well as having many major exhibitions, including London’s Prestigious Serpentine Gallery.

In later years he attended Sunderland University fulfilling his dream of obtaining first-class Fine Arts degree which he saw as recognition by the establishment.  Some of Kenneth Watts paintings which will be auctioned on the 6th June, have their roots in sixties pop art and gradually become more complex and technical through the years, include a study of the old Jarrow railway station and a striking painting on the former mineral line signal box between Jarrow and Hebburn.  In 2014 in the middle of his Master’s degree he became unwell, sadly passing away before it was finished

Egyptian Delight at Boldon

Lot 110a A collection of Egyptian artefacts to include a bronze crocodile, 5cm length, a standing cat, various scarabs etc. Accompanied with certificates, dated 1945 'M.A. Mansor Antiques Cairo'
Sold £900 Antique and Interiors Sale - 6th June 2018

M. A. Mansoor (1881–1968) was an antiquarian who compiled an exquisite collection of Amarna Period sculptures. He was born to Coptic Orthodox Egyptian parents in Cairo in 1881. After having graduated from high school, with an excellent knowledge of Arabic, English and French, he taught Arabic for some years to foreign officials who occupied principal positions in the Egyptian Government.
As early as 16 years old, the history of Ancient Egypt began to fascinate him. He bought books, became an ardent visitor to the Cairo Museum and travelled extensively in Egypt to admire and study the monuments of his ancestors. He learned much about Egyptian art, but was to learn much more later during his long career as an antiquarian. He studied Coptic and began to decipher hieroglyphics. Soon he also became deeply involved in the study of the art of Greece, Persia and Mesopotamia and the early Christian and Islamic worlds. He loved the antiquity of the Near and Middle East. He understood and appreciated their cultures and their many forms of art. But his first love and prime interest always remained Egypt. In this he excelled and in later years, he developed a distinguished reputation, which left no doubt as to his integrity and his masterful knowledge of every facet of Ancient Egyptian art and culture.

His workshop became the most important in Paris and within twenty years, it led Europe. A major factor in his success was his 1855 purchase of 144 instruments made by the Italian masters for 80,000 francs, from the heirs of Luigi Tarisio, an Italian tradesman.
