The Langs' Fairy Books are a collection of true and fictional stories for children, published between 1889 and 1913 by Andrew Lang and his wife Leonora Blanche Alleyne.  Leonora was an author, editor and translator who assumed editorial control of the series in the 1890s while her husband Andrew edited the series and wrote the prefaces.

The authorship and translation of the Coloured Fairy Books is often and incorrectly attributed to Andrew Lang alone. Nora is not named on the front cover or spines of any of the Coloured Fairy Books, which all tout Andrew as their editor. However, as Andrew acknowledges in a preface to The Lilac Fairy Book (1910), "The fairy books have been almost wholly the work of Mrs. Lang, who has translated and adapted them from the French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish, Catalan, and other languages."

The Langs did not collect any fairy tales from oral primary sources, however only they and Madame d'Aulnoy (1651-1705) have collected such a large variety of sources.  The Langs indeed gave many of the tales their first appearance in the English language.

The Pink Fairy Book (1897) contains 41 Japanese, Scandinavian and Sicilian tales.

Two 1 inch scale Fowler ploughing engines made by Accucraft Maxitrak for auction on 6th March

Fowler were the leading manufacturer of steam ploughing equipment from the 1870s. In use there would be two engines, one either side of the field. The wire rope on the drum under one engine was wound out and attached to a double ended plough. The other engines rope was attached to the other end of the plough. The plough could then be pulled across the field by each engine in turn, both engines moving forward as the ploughing progressed. This method prevented the heavy engines from compacting the soil as they would with direct action ploughing.  Other implements could be used instead of the plough, to harrow or land drain fields for example. One particular job which is still the reserve of the steam plough engine is dredging lakes and rivers, the great length of wire rope used in steam ploughing being ideal for this job.

These models represent the class BB1 engine, the largest engine to see common use in the UK. With a twin cylinder compound, two speed gearing and a coal fired boiler. There is a crankshaft driven boiler feed pump with bypass valve, cable plough drum equipment with bevel gear drive and clutch, as seen on full size engines.

Length: 574mm

Width: 211mm

Height: 303mm

For Auction 21st February 2024

Charles Summers (1825-1878) was an English born sculptor who started his working life at the tender age of 8 working in mason' yards and showed ability in carving fancy stone work.  At 19 after working in London for Henry Weekes RA and Musgrave Watson he studied at the Royal Academy schools winning a silver medal in 1854 for best model from life and a gold medal for the set subject 'Mercy interceding for the Vanquished'.

In 1852 he was advised to take a sea voyage to Australia as a cure for the Tuberculosis he was suffering from.  He tried his hand at gold panning on the Victorian gold fields before resuming his career as a sculptor in Melbourne. He was commissioned to supervise the stone carvings for Victoria's Parliament House and he designed the medal for the 1866 Intercolonial Exhibition. His bronze and stone memorial to the explorers, Burke and Wills, that stands in the centre of Melbourne at 5.49m in height, remains the largest bronze ever completed by a sculptor working in Australia. It is considered one of the best examples of his work and established his reputation as one of the most celebrated Australian sculptors of his time. He returned to London in 1867 and after a tour of the Continent, established a studio at Via Margutta, Rome.

He exhibited at The Great Australian Art Exhibition and his works are held in the National Museum of Victoria, the New South Wales and Victorian Houses of Parliament, the Mitchell Library and State Library in New South Wales, as well as the National Portrait Gallery in London.

Charles Francis Summers (1857-1945) was his son, born in Richmond, Melbourne who followed in his father's footsteps travelling with him to Rome when he was eleven.

At its peak the studio established by his father was one of the finest in Rome employing twenty men.  Charles Francis learned the trade alongside his father and was influenced by professors Benzoni, Seitz and Chelli.

During his long career he took commissions in America, Russia, Finland and elsewhere in Europe.  The largest collection of his works can be found at the Rotorua Museum and Art Gallery in New Zealand.

Delighting in the richness of detail

Lot 1.
A 19th century quarter length marble bust of a young lady wearing a floral lace edged bonnet, signed Orazio Andreoni (1840-1895), bears date 1885, Roma, H 62cm, W 50cm.
Estimate £1,000-£1,500
For Auction 21st February 2024

Orazio Andreoni (1840-1895) was a 19th century Italian sculptor based in Rome.  His works in marble were of subjects after the antique as well as his own compositions of often historical or romantic works.  He delighted in the richness of detail as can be seen here in the exquisite carving on the bonnet and clothing.  He exhibited as far away as Glasgow, 1888, Berlin, 1892 and was active for a time in America, thus enhancing his international reputation.  Indeed perhaps Andreoni's greatest contribution was his large workshop in Rome where a generation of sculptors received their training.
