To be auctioned on Wednesday 3rd November, a collection of black and white postcards relating to Miss Vesta Tilley.
Estimate £30 - £50
Matilda Alice Powles (1864 - 1952) was an English music hall performer. She adopted the stage name Vesta Tilley and became one of the best-known male impersonators of her era. She typically performed as a dandy or fop as can be seen in some of these postcards. By the 1890s Vesta Tilley was England's highest earning woman. At a Royal Command Performance in 1912 she scandalised Queen Mary by wearing trousers. During the First World War she became known as England's greatest recruiting sergeant, singing patriotic songs dressed in army fatigues. Her last performance was in 1920 at the Coliseum Theatre in London.
We are thrilled to be taking part again in the Friends of East Boldon Parks Scarecrow Trail.
This year the theme is 'Halloween Haunts' .
We have Dementors, a Basilisk, Hermione Granger riding a broom and Harry Potter himself saving the day (not with a wand but with an auction Gavel!)
Come along and enjoy the Scarecrow Trail around East Boldon.
The scarecrows will be on display until Sunday evening 31st October.
For Auction 3rd November 2021, this fabulous piece of Football nostalgia from 1966, 'World Cup Willie' was designed by a freelance illustrator Reg Hoye. Hoye had previously worked on illustrations for Enid Blyton's Noddy books and Dr Who and The Daleks. Initial sketches of a Bulldog, figures wearing bowler hats or cloth caps were discarded as being too class conscious. Four Lion designs were submitted and the first of which was based on Hoye's son Leo was chosen. The nickname 'Willie' came about due to the Lion's uncanny resemblance to the Football Association's rather square shouldered chief administrative officer E.K. Wilson.
"A lion with a Beatle haircut, a Union Jack Jersey and an address somewhere in Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park' remarked the Daily Mirror at the time.
'World Cup Willie' was the first World Cup mascot paving the way for the merchandise boom that now accompanies international sporting events.
Estimate £150 - £200
