We are getting all geared up for next weeks sale and look what we have found!!! This fantastic watercolour by local artist John Henry Mole. Born in Alnwick in 1814, John Henry Mole decided to put down the pen and pick up the paintbrush; leaving his job behind as a clerk in a solicitors office, Mole thankfully became a landscape artist. A wise choice we think! Look at how beautifully balanced his work of colour is in this piece ‘Gathering Bait’. The watercolour is dated 1867 and will be auctioned as lot 392 on Wednesday 2nd June. We would love to see where it ends up and how it ends up displayed... #JohnHenryMole #artist #boldonauctions #boldonauctiongallery #boldonauctiongalleries #boldonauctionsbestbits #art #gatheringbait

Artists of Northumbria for Auction

On the Orders of the Descendants of William Thomas Nichols Boyce; an unseen Collection of watercolours from both the Artist and other leading North East Artists will be offered for Auction on 2nd June 2021.

William Thomas Nichols Boyce was a Marine and Landscape painter in both oil and watercolour.

Born in Norfolk in 1857, the son of a master mariner, he moved with his parents to South Shields in 1872.  Boyce became first an apprentice joiner, then worked in a draper's shop before becoming a professional artist.

It was Boyce's watercolours of steam tugs, brigs, schooners and steam colliers (whilst including a wide range of climatic conditions in his work) which provided a valuable record of the transition from sail to steam before World War I.

He exhibited at South Shields Art Club, Bewick Club, Newcastle and from 1905 until his death in 1911 he was a regular exhibitor at Artists of the Northern Counties at the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle.

Remembering David Jones

One of the collection of Miner's Strike Badges to be auctioned on Wednesday 2nd June.

This badge is particularly interesting because it references David Gareth Jones one of two young men who died on the picket line at Ackton Hall colliery, near Featherstone in 1984 three days after the National pit strike had begun.

Pin your heart on your sleeve

We have a fascinating array of Miner's Strike Badges from across the North East, Scotland and Wales.  For Auction 2nd June 2021.

The miners' strike of 1984–85 was a major industrial action to shut down the British coal industry in an attempt to prevent colliery closures. It was led by Arthur Scargill of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) against the National Coal Board (NCB), a government agency.
