Spring comes early to Boldon Auction Galleries
Coming up in our next sale on Wednesday 26th February is this collection of Autumn Crocus pattern Clarice Cliff pottery. Clarice was an English ceramic artist and designer who became head of the creative department at Newport Pottery in Staffordshire after starting her career there in 1916. Crocus pattern was created by Clarice Cliff in 1928 by producing a simple hand painted pattern of Crocus flowers in orange, blue and purple. The vibrant colours used led to large sales which saw twenty women trained to paint this pattern working 5 and a half days a week for much of the 1930s. Crocus was unusual because it was produced on not only tea, coffee and tableware but also novelty items made as giftware.
