My Dear Sir,
On passing through Newcastle yesterday I received your very kind note with an invitation from yourself and Mrs Crawhall to Stagshaw House, I assure you nothing would have given me more real pleasure, than to have accepted it. But I had been travelling about sketching for pictures, out of the direct rounds of either railway or coaches consequently my stack of money became too exhausted with carriage prices that I was forced to forgo several invitations.
The one to your dwelling should have been the first had it only been to thank yourself and Mrs Crawhall for so many former kindnesses both to myself and the family.
