Newfoundland dogs were truly multipurpose animals. Capable of working in the cold water as setters and haulers of nets and as retrievers of hooked fish in the Arctic North and of hunting birds and other game in the interior, retrieving sea birds and ducks from the water as well as hauling sleds and carts that were loaded down with fish, furs, lumber, and other raw materials.
This mounted ancestral Newfoundland or St. John’s water dog head was a local adaptation of the rough cur dog that was so common among the English working class. The collar with brass label which reads 'H. Cunningham, Polar Bear Exhibition'. The shield shaped plaque 45cm long.
