We will be selling English and Continental Ceramics and Works of Art, Collectables, Cigarette Cards, Jewellery, Silver and Silver-Plate, Books, Carpets and Rugs, Oils, Watercolours and Prints, Continental and English Furniture.

All valuations for sale are free of charge and we display our Fine Art & Antique Sale Catalogues with the Antiques Trade Gazette at www.antiquestradegazette.com, Invaluable at www.invaluable.com and with UKauctioneers at www.ukauctioneers.com .  In addition we offer an online bidding service for these sales via the-saleroom.com for bidders who cannot attend the sale.  Bidders can access the entire sale in real time and bid in real time.  This ensures that our Fine Art & Antique Sales reach a truly international market place.

Summer Sale Highlights

Our summer sale held on Wednesday 13th July was a huge success with many top lots.

Lot 32, A Burmantofts Faience Anglo Persian vase by Louis Kramer decorated with fish did not actually sell during the auction itself but quickly became the subject of a fiercely contested bidding battle after the sale, finishing with a selling price of £3400 which comfortably exceeded its upper estimate.

Lot 45 and 46 were real gems - two pairs of early twentieth century Art Nouveau ceramic tiles - which attracted a huge amount of interest on the internet and phones before selling in the room for £1000 and £1450 each.

Model enthusiasts were rewarded with two treasures, Lot 99, a part scratch built 7 1/4 inch gauge LNER Class B1 locomotive with detailed drawings which sold for £2100

and Lot 166, a shipyard model of the Silver Elm which sold for £3300.

A rare Beckwith of London pneumatic air rifle with cylindrical barrel and leather clad stock, complete with its pump, sold well at £1550

and Lot 109, a German Luftwaffe officer's dagger fetched £300.

We had a large collection of musical instruments in this auction with 15 violins, 2 cellos - one of which sold for £1500, a banjo, a squeeze box

and a Steinway piano which sold for £2400.

A silver four piece tea service fetched £610

and Lot 315, a gentleman's Rolex Oyster Perpetual "Date Just" chronometer sold for £1000, showing that these classic items are still selling well at auction.

We had some interesting Masonic items in the sale including Lot 426, a silver Masonic Lodge presentation set which reach £1550

and Lot 139, a collection bowl, gavels and ceremonial swords which sold for £150.

There was an eclectic range of artwork with pieces such as Lot 474, a half portrait of a lady attributed to Alan Lowndes which sold for £600 contrasting sharply with the ultra-modern Lucie Bennett Red Felt Tip Girl which sold for £490.

Lot 528 was an example of good quality early twentieth century furniture, an oak triple door wardrobe with carved acorns, that sold for £800;

and lot 562 was an ornate 20th century walnut Italian decorative centre table with acanthus carved edge, with heavily carved winged female supports with lion paw feet and a heavily pierced carved stretcher, the legs each ending in an open mouthed lion.  It generated a good amount of interest and sold for £1700.

Collector's £8,000 win on the cards

THE subject matter ranges from Girls of Many Lands and Notable MPs to Gems of Belgian Architecture and Holiday Haunts by the Sea.

One man’s lifetime collection of 30,000 cigarette cards were sold yesterday at Boldon Auction Galleries in South Tyneside.
The 148 albums and 14 assorted lots of cards date from the 1920s onwards and came from a house in Hartlepool.

The collection, which sold for £8,000, includes popular runs of footballers, cricketers, swimmers, boxers, rugby players and race horses, turf personalities, angling, cycling, film stars, radio celebrities, musical celebrities, girls from the shows, famous beauties, and Kings and Queens.

Aeroplanes, pilots and airports, railway engines, railway equipment, celebrated ships, mining, engineering wonders, fire fighting appliances and famous inventors also figure.

Military subjects include military motors, colonial and Indian army badges, military uniforms of the British Empire, military mottos, modern armaments, life aboard a Man of War, the Great War series, Army corps and divisional signals, the history of naval dress and soldiers of the King.

The natural world is covered by aviary and cage birds, dogs, wild animals of the world, poultry, British livestock, wonders of the sea, flower culture in pots, alpine flowers, British butterflies, curious beasts and game birds and wild fowl.

Offbeat subjects include Alice in Wonderland, wireless telephony, household hints, arms of public schools, garden life, flags of the League of Nations, physical culture, polar exploration, zoo studies, the bridges of Britain, shrines of Britain, and fortune telling.

Giles Hodges, who runs Boldon Auction Galleries, said: “It is a complete and outstanding collection and a real cross section of subjects.

“Everything is there. It shows what collecting is all about.”

One of the football cards shows Inverness-born Tom McDonald, who signed for Newcastle United from Rangers for £2,000 in 1921.

In 10 years at Newcastle, the inside forward made 367 appearances and scored 103 goals, and was a key player in United’s FA Cup and League title wins in 1924 and 1927.

During these glory seasons he formed a potent striking partnerships with United star forwards Hughie Gallacher and Stan Seymour.

After he retired from the game McDonald worked for United as a club steward with responsibility for the press box.

Also in the sale were 17 albums of black and white photographs of steam locomotives taken by a Sunderland train spotter, which sold for £260.

A linen table cloth signed by the Sunderland 1973 FA Cup final squad, including manager Bob Stokoe and Arthur Cox, plus the programme from the Wembley game, when Sunderland beat Leeds 1-0, fetched £150.

Sale Highlights

Sale highlights from our Fine Art and Antique Sale on Wednesday 7th March 2012.

The most spectacular performer in our spring sale was Lot 28, a small Lalique green satin glass frog seated in a shallow circular bowl which fetched an impressive £14500! Auctioneer Giles Hodges said “Ribbit! Ribbit!”

Lot 54 was another rare item, an early 17th century lantern clock which hadn’t been altered like many of its type so was even more appealing to the buyers.

It sold for £6500 to a telephone bidder.

Lot 55, a pair of Fairyland Lustre vases by Daisy Makeig Jones, also stirred up a flurry of interest from the bidders before selling for £3600.

Building on our recent successful sales of musical instruments, this sale had a couple of guitars that sold very well: A Gretsch 6120AM which fetched £1100, and an acoustic guitar by Jose Ramirez which sold for £1400.

Jewellery and watches were popular, with Lot 293, a platinum radiant cut diamond solitaire ring, selling for £11000,

Lot 314 a Cartier gentleman’s watch selling for £640, Lot 353 a gentleman’s gold Rolex watch selling for £520 and Lot 389 a gentleman’s Rolex Oyster Perpetual watch selling for £650.

One particularly charming lot was The Good Child’s Cabinet, a miniature library of 15 children’s toy books with titles such as “Fairy Tales of Mother Goose” and “A History of Flowers”.

The cabinet generated a large amount of interest from telephone and internet bidders before selling in the room for £2700.

Lot 553, a set of three watercolours of Valetta by Carmello Bonello proved popular, selling for £850, and Lot 539, Barnaby Rudge and the Raven by William Hunt, sold for £420.

Furniture went well, with local favourite, Robert “Mouseman” Thompson items fetching £1300 for a dining table, £2100 for a sideboard and £2400 for a set of four chairs,

while Lot 591, a 19th century camphorwood campaign chest, sold for £1000,

and Lot 606, an oak longcase clock with 8 day movement by Cuthbert Darnton, sold for £2200.

The most interesting local items were a collection Durham Quilts including one that sold for £300.

We had a heroic day at Boldon Auction Galleries today when 28 lots of super hero comics and action figures sold for out of this world prices, far exceeding auctioneer Giles Hodges' expectations.

A fine early 17th Century Lantern Clock,

circa 1620 - 1650, with original verge

escapement, the central dial engraved with tulips,

the chapter ring with stylised wheatsheaf half hour

markers, the hand cast bell to the top enclosed by

four finials and straps surmounted with a turned

finial with three engraved pediments,

the movement resting on square supports and

rope driven (not converted, no weights or pendulum).

'The Good Child's Cabinet' (Miniature Library) containing

15 miniature children's toy books.

The hand painted cabinet depicts an astragal glazed

bookshelf full of books with shaped cornice,

the sliding panel opens to reveal the books inside.

December Auction Highlights

Our pre-Christmas Antique and Fine Art Auction, held on Wednesday 14th December, was a great success with many buyers finding the perfect last minute Christmas gift.


Ceramics, Glass and Works of Art
We had an interesting collection of ceramics and works of art including Lot 11, a pair of Chinese Canton enamel vases which sold for £650;

Lot 74, A Beswick cantering shire horse and small foal in Rocking Horse Grey, estimated at £100-150, who galloped away at £440;

and Lot 84, A Bizarre by Clarice Cliff coffee service which sold for £560.

Collectables
Our most exciting lot from the Collectables category was clearly the folio of correspondence from Sir George Byng to Rear Admiral Delaval.

These letters attracted a lot of interest from the press and although they didn’t meet their reserve at auction there was a flurry of activity after the sale leading to them selling to a local collector.

Militaria
Interest in militaria remained strong with 3 bayonets estimated at £60-100 selling for £360 and Lot 140, a Japanese World War II officer’s sword fetching £380.

Musical Instruments
We continue to achieve very desirable results with our musical instruments, building on our strong customer base to sell two violins and bows for £1450 and £2050 and two cellos and bows for £2000 each.

Jewellery, Silver and Silver Plate
Gold and silver continued to sell well with many buyers looking for the perfect present.
Lot 232, a 1960’s gentleman’s Rolex Oyster chronometer sold for £1350 and Lot 252, an 18ct gold diamond cluster ring fetched £900.

Coins
We had a large selection of coins from a private collector which generated a lot of interest and achieved some particularly strong prices, notably Lot 302, four 22ct gold UK one pound coins which sold for £1800 and the dramatic success of Lot 321, a box of old collectors coins valued quite conservatively which exceeded all expectations by selling for £2150.

Oils, Watercolours and Prints
We had a large collection of paintings in the sale, many coming from a single estate. Interesting lots included Lot 370, an oil on canvas by Charles James Lauder of “Shipping on the Clyde” which sold for £880;

Lot 385, an oil on canvas of Highland cattle by A A G which sold for £1250;

and Lot 401, a very pretty oil on ivorine panel dated 1877 of wild heather with butterflies, which sold to an international telephone bidder for £2000.

Furniture
Robert “Mouseman” Thompson furniture was a big feature of the sale with items including a barometer, sewing box and book stand and larger pieces such as an oak refectory table which sold for £1200, three chairs and a carver which sold for £1150 and a sideboard which fetched £1750 even though it was missing one of its drawers.

Lot 425, a Heriz carpet with turquoise blue ground, attracted a lot of interest before selling to an internet bidder for £3700.

Items of local interest
Our most interesting local item was definitely the naval correspondence mentioned previously and we are particularly pleased that it has stayed in the north east. For further information about the collection please see previous entries on this blog.

Other regional lots included local postcards, a set of sixteen volumes of Archaeologia Aeliana, the journal of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne and a glass tankard depicting the Sacriston Disaster of 16th November 1903 which sold for £90.
