One of the highlights of the General Sale (17th May) was Lot 330.

A Rocking horse made by F. H. Ayres, the stand stamped Harrods Knightsbridge.

The company started by Frederick Henry Ayres in London produced beautiful rocking horses from the middle of the 19th century until the 1950’s. In 1940 the original company was taken over by Sykes and soon after by Slazenger.


Ayres horses are generally regarded as the “Rolls Royce” of rocking horses producing a great variety of different styles of horse.  

The heads are finely carved and shaped, often turned to one side, with well carved ears and fine muzzles.  Painted and highlighted glass eyes are always used along with subtle dappled paintwork.  The stand is normally made from pine.  This stand was stamped 'Harrods Knightsbridge'.  

With a flurry of telephone bids and bids on the book this rocking horse despite requiring some love and attention galloped away at £2,300.
