Antique Sale Highlights June 2014

Sale highlights from our Fine Art & Antique Auction held on Wednesday 11th June 2014

Our summer Fine Art and Antique auction got off to a roaring start with the sale of Lot 1, A Raleigh 49 cc pedal motorcycle which sold for £300 and Lot 2, an AJS model 16? 350 cc motorcycle which sold for £700 although Tom’s favourite lot, the Triumph Bonneville did not reach its reserve.

The highlight of the ceramics section was Lot 68, a Pablo Picasso Madoura white earthenware “Visage” plate which sold to the internet for £1100.  Other successful lots included a set of 6 Royal Doulton figures celebrating 70 years of Mickey Mouse which sold for £260,  a large Royal Crown Derby “Old Imari” tea set which sold for £650 against an estimate of £150-200, and 169 an Art Deco Tinos bronze Danish fluted bowl and bowl and cover which sold to the room for £400.

Exotic taxidermy continues to sell well with a Pangolin (also known as a scaly anteater) selling for £500 and a pre-1947 leopard skin with head mount selling for £350.

Items of local interest included Lot 200, a large album of postcards including Heworth Colliery, Consett, Anfield Plain etc and the launch of the Mauretania which sold for £800, Lot 207, a large collection of maps from Northumberland, River Tyne and South Shields etc which sold to the room for £1200, and Lot 478, a large silver salver depicting six iconic Newcastle buildings which sold to a telephone bidder for £1600.

Two interesting toy lots were the 1950’s Rail Racing car (also known as a tether car or “Spindizzy”) which sold for £1400 and the large scale 1930’s Mettoy tinplate, clockwork, twin propeller aeroplane which sold for £200.  Both lots  went to internet bidders.

We had a strong jewellery section in this sale with both gold and silver selling well.  Lot 295, an 18ct gold bracelet weighing 53.3 grams sold for £620 and Lot 363, a gold and enamelled circular pendant with 2 pomanders and 2 brooches sold to the internet for £550.

Along with the silver salver mentioned above, Lot 469, a hammered silver Arts and Crafts bowl decorated with semi-precious stones generated a lot of interest before selling to the room for £1250.

Fine quality jewellery also sold well with the following particularly good examples: Lot 314, a platinum and diamond Art Deco ring, selling for £850, Lot 451, an 18ct white gold solitaire diamond ring with approximately 1.25ct diamond selling for £1450 and Lot 462, a pair of diamond stud earrings each with 0.50 carat diamond selling for £1050.

There was a nautical theme to the best selling paintings with Lot 520 topping the bill.  The oil on canvas of “The Falcon King, Hong Kong” by John Bentham Dinsdale (1927-2008) sold to the internet for £1200, reaching its top estimate.  Lot 524 “Sailing boats on a river” by Arthur Knighton-Hammond (1875-1970) sold for £550, while a watercolour of the entrance to South Shields harbour by the talented local artist John William Gilroy (1868-1944) sold for £260.

The furniture section contained a good mixture of antique and more modern lots.  Older pieces included a late 19th century mahogany long case clock with satinwood and ebony inlays with an 8 day movement by Grimshaw and Baxter of London, which sold for £1250, while more more contemporary pieces were an oak Ercol day bed which sold for £450, a teak dining room suite which sold for £460 to the internet, and a reproduction Regency style D-end dining table and 8 chairs which sold for £450 against an estimate of £150-250.  One lot which generated a  interest was a Roland HP 11 digital grand  piano which sold to the room for £600, doubling its estimate.

All in a spin!

A model of a 1950's tethered racing car with steel chassis and aluminium body, petrol engine.
26 cm long
Estimate £60-£100

The 1930's saw the introduction of a collection of model cars commonly known as 'spindizzies' or 'tether cars'. They were usually handmade, fitted with a model airplane engine and raced around a wooden track, just like the full sized racers of the day. The cars raced initially on a tether (cable) anchored to a central pivot, and as speeds increased you needed to spin around to watch them – just like flying a model airplane with the same dizzying sensation – hence the nickname “Spindizzies.”

By the late 1940's, the cars - by then with 5 horsepower - attained speeds of more than 150 miles per hour.  As the little cars sped faster around the track, the hobby also increased speed and by the late 1940's there were more than 500 organised tether-car clubs in the United States.  Then as quickly as it had begun, the craze faded and radio controlled cars arrived.  The 1980's saw a brief revival with collectors and enthusiasts rating them as examples of bygone craftsmanship.
