Fine Art and Antique Auction 27th November 2013

Our most recent Fine Art auction got off to a good start with lot 19, a Newport Pottery Clarice Cliff Bizarre "Secrets" pattern triangular shaped vase, estimated at £300-500 which sold for a massive £950 to a commission bidder.

A commission bid also secured lot 38, a Lalique opaque glass "Fontainebleau" vase decorated with scrolls and grapes, for £800, exceeding its upper estimate by £300.

Royal Doulton figures of Henry VIII and his six wives sold for £340 and £500, and the sale saw a huge collection of Hummel figures sell for prices ranging from £45 for four figures up to £500 for a figure group.  Highlights were lot 118, “Ring Around the Rosie” which sold for £300,  lot 135 “St Nicholas Day” and “Knecht Ruprecht Ruprecht” which were very relevant for the season and sold for £220, and 147 “World Wide Wanders” which sold for £500.

A large model of a bronze elephant with ivory tusks sold for £340 and we had two interesting lots of vintage alcohol, the first being 11 bottles of port which sold for £300 and the second, a last issue of Royal Naval rum in a sealed gallon barrel and basket.  The last Royal Naval rum ration was on 31st July 1970 and became known as "Black Tot Day" as the sailors were unhappy about the loss of the rum ration. This lot sold for £340.

Gold and jewellery continued to sell well with four full sovereigns dated 1891 and 1925 selling for £670, gold chains weighing 39.3 grams selling for £390 and an 18ct gold emerald ring which sold for £340 being among the top sellers.

Watches also held their value with a gentleman’s 18ct gold pocket watch selling at the top of its estimate at £500 and Omega and Rolex gentlemen’s watches selling for £300 and £780.

Lot 452, a silver four piece tea set, Sheffield 1953, made by Harrison Brothers and Howson, sold above it’s upper estimate at £550 and lot 440, a silver oak two handled tray with silver pierced gallery dated 1895, sold for £300.

We had an interesting collection of art work from a wide range of eras including lot 469, a watercolour of Santa Maria Formosa by Michael Felmingham which sold for £260 and 19th century unsigned watercolours of Mount Vesuvius and Naples and an Italian landscape which sold for £1000 and £450 respectively.

Lot 523 was an interesting Malaysian watercolour from 1961 by Jehan Chan of fishing boats and huts which sold to an internet bidder for £500 and an exquisite miniature portrait of a lady dated 1787 which featured on the front of this sale’s catalogue sold for £200 against an estimate of £60-100.

Furniture sold well in this auction with some big pieces fetching large prices such as lot 533, a 20th century snooker/dining table complete with scoreboards which sold for £480 and a John Broadwood and Sons baby grand piano sold for £400.

A collection of Charles Barr reproduction mahogany furniture sold particularly well with the dining table and chairs fetching £820, a glazed bookcase selling for £1100 and a standing corner cabinet for £400, while an oak Globe Wernicke five tier bookcase sold for £360 and a mahogany two piece bedroom suite comprising a mirror door wardrobe and a dressing chest sold for £380.

Lot 585, a 19th century mahogany linen press sold above its £250-350 estimate at £560 and lot 592, a mahogany oval extending dining table with gadrooned edge and a set of 8 mahogany chairs sold for £520 illustrating that good quality classic pieces continue to sell well.

One of our most gruesome lots was a World War I German trench club studded with hobnails which sold for £100 while at the other end of the scale a sterling silver and enamelled butterfly brooch sold for £85.

Charity Valuation Day a Success

Giles Hodges from Boldon Auction Galleries went along to a local charity in Sunderland last week to lend support for people with Niemann-Pick Disease.

Niemann-Pick is a disease which finds sufferers having a build up of toxic materials in the body's cells caused by an enzyme deficiency.

There are three types of this disease:-
In Niemann-Pick Type A this accumulation occurs very quickly, an affected child will usually die before reaching three years of age.

Niemann-Pick Type B does not affect the brain and, although growth may be slow, those affected will survive into adolescence or early adulthood, with many being able to lead a full and normal life.
In Niemann-Pick Type C, the brain and other organs are affected, leading to progressive intellectual decline, loss of motor skills, seizures and dementia. Speech can become slurred and swallowing problems may develop. The rate at which the disease progresses varies greatly between patients; children who develop neurological symptoms in early childhood are thought to have a more aggressive form of the disease, others may remain symptom free for many years.

The Valuation Morning raised £70 for this very worthwhile cause.

A Bundle of Hummel !!

We have just finished cataloguing a large Private Collection of Hummel figures to be sold in our next Fine Art and Antique Auction on Wednesday 27th November.

The history of Hummel is a fascinating one taking us back to the 1930's and a German Nun called Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel who began drawing pastoral images of children. These drawings were in turn made into 'art cards' which became popular throughout Germany catching the eye of Franz Goebel who was at that time head of W. Goebel Porzellanfabrik. The Goebel factory acquired the rights to turn Sister Maria Innocentia's drawings into figurines and the first Hummel figures were produced in 1935. American soldiers stationed in West Germany at the end of World War II contributed to the increase in popularity of these figures in the United States by sending these nostalgic pieces home as presents.

Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel died in 1946 at the age of 37. Goebel together with his team of artists and a board of Sisters from the Convent where Sister Maria Innocentia had lived carried on her legacy until 2008 when the production of Hummel figures was discontinued.
