Thomas Miles Richardson was a local lad, born in Newcastle. He had a varied career; first working as an engraver, then a cabinet maker after which he followed in his father's footsteps becoming a teacher and between 1806-1813 took the post his father had held at St. Andrew's Grammar school in Newcastle. It was after this period that Thomas Miles Richardson became a renowned landscape painter painting in the Scottish Highlands and Borders and travelling to both Italy and Switzerland.
