Published in The Journal - Wednesday 12th June 2013, written by Tony Henderson.
WHEN a Wearside teenager won a competition 50 years ago to name the next album by The Beatles, the thrills did not stop there.
Margaret Svenson, 15, from Sunderland, also got to meet the group at a hotel in Carlisle in November 1963.
Her best friend Christine Gatenby gave Margaret her Please Please Me Beatles LP to be signed by the foursome.
And Christine’s younger sister Jackie, then aged 12, also asked Margaret to take along her new album by the group, With the Beatles.
All four Beatles signed the LP sleeve and today , after 50 years, Jackie has put the keepsake up for auction.
It is expected to fetch at least £3,000 at Boldon Auction Galleries in South Tyneside.
Now Mrs Jackie Marsden, of South Bents in Sunderland, she said: “ Christine was supposed to accompany Margaret to Carlisle but my mother thought she was too young to go.
“We gave her Margaret our LPs and she had them signed. It was a big thrill and I have kept it for 50 years. We had all their records.”
Giles Hodges, who runs Boldon Auction Galleries, said: “There has been an overwhelming response to the album sale. There has been international interest and we have installed extra phone lines.”
Potential buyers have also travelled from Liverpool to inspect the LP.
“The Beatles still generate a lot of enthusiasm with all age groups,” said Giles. “The album also has rarity value because it is from the early days of The Beatles, when they were more approachable.
“Rock and pop music memorabilia has taken a grip of the market and has become more and more collectable and more of an investment.”
In 1963, With the Beatles had advance orders of a half million and sold another half million by September 1965, making it the second album to sell a million copies in the UK, after the soundtrack to the 1958 film South Pacific.
With the Beatles remained at the top of the charts for 21 weeks, displacing Please Please Me, so that the group occupied the top spot for 51 consecutive weeks.
Beatles for Sale was released on in December 1964 for the Christmas market.
The album went to number one and stayed there for 11 of the 46 weeks that it spent in the Top 20.

BBC Antique's Road Trip at Boldon
BBC Antique's Road Trip, now in it's 7th Series motored along early this morning in a Classic Car to Boldon Auction Galleries where Antique's Road Trip stalwarts David Harper and Paul Laidlaw are currently competing to make a profit from items purchased earlier on in the week. The Victorian and General Household Auction is full to capacity as potential purchasers jostle amongst the camera crew.
Sale Highlights Fine Art & Antique Auction 6th March 2013
The unseasonably cold weather did not put off buyers in our Spring Fine Art and Antique Auction held on 6th March with high prices being achieved across the whole sale.
Clocks were a big feature in this auction, with lot 113 a French gilt metal mantle clock with cloisonne enamelled decoration selling for £1100 and a highly popular Liberty and Co pewter carriage clock selling for £2600. There were also several grandfather clocks in the furniture section which sold well, including Lot 438 an oak long case clock with 30 hour movement by Barnish of Rochdale which fetched £500.
The star lot was the Demetre Chiparus Chain Dancer, circa 1925, cold-painted, gilt-bronze and ivory, on an onyx plinth, estimated at between £3000-5000, which sold for £7600 after intense competition from the bidders.
Silver prices remained high with a large oval tea tray weighing 49.4oz selling for £720 and an Art Deco design 4 piece tea set weighing 47.8 oz selling for £750, while a pair of Georg Jensen candlesticks designed by Sievard Bernadotte, sold for £700. Gold also sold well with two 9ct watch chains selling for £720 and an 18ct gold tricolour bracelet selling for £1640, while diamonds remained popular with an 18ct gold diamond marquise cut ring with 1.22 carat diamond selling for £1900 and an Art Deco platinum 3 stone ring selling for £6000.
We had a large collection of paintings with interesting lots including local artist Sheila Mackie’s oil on canvas of “Owl in flight” which sold after the sale for £400. Sheila Mackie lived and taught in Consett and died in 2010.
Other art work included a William Calcott Knell oil on board of a British three decker ship at anchor which sold for £ 400 and a Bernard Benedict Hemy oil on board of fishermen rowing to the harbour which sold for £420.
Highlights of the furniture section included lot 427, a William IV rosewood library table with tooled gilt leather inset top which sold for £520, and lot 443, a Victorian walnut framed settee with shaped carved back, accompanied by 6 walnut chairs and 2 armchairs which sold for £1500.
Following on from our previous sales of “Mouseman” furniture, we had several pieces of “Acornman” furniture in this sale including a set of 6 dining chairs and 2 carvers which sold for £580 and an oak dresser which sold for £380.
In keeping with the current fashion for items from the Orient, lot 460, an Oriental hardwood cabinet with single drawer and 2 cupboard doors estimated at £100-150, sold for £240.
And finally, lot 447, an unusual 1930's very tall oak tambour front filing cabinet with moulded top, exceeded expectations and sold for £320.
We are now accepting entries for our next Fine Art and Antique Auction to be held on Wednesday 12th June 2013. BBC Flog It! will be filming at this Auction.
Please call in, telephone or email us and we will arrange to value and/or enter items for Auction.

The Flog It! team and presenter Paul Martin invite you to come and have your antiques and family heirlooms valued for free at one of our valuation days.
